Welcome to

Vision, Imaging Science and Technology Laboratory

Our research activities span a variety of topics in human and electronic imaging; our group members include people affiliated with the Neuroscience, Electrical Engineering and Psychology Departments. The ongoing research projects include:

Vision Science (Functional magnetic resonance imaging and psychophysics):

Our functional neuroimaging experiments focus mainly on analyses of the visual pathways ranging from brain structures and signals to higher level object recognition and attention.   As part of our work, and in close collaboration with David Heeger, we developed various pieces of software tools that are distributed to the broader community of scientists.

Figure 1 . The Retinotopy paradigm. Two stimuli are used to measure the retinotopic maps in cortex. Expanding ring stimuli map eccentricity and rotating wedge stimuli map polar angle. The phase of the best-fitting sinusoid for each voxel indicates the position in the visual field that produces the maximal activation for that voxel. Thus, these pseudo-color phase maps are used to visualize the retinotopic maps. Data are shown for the left hemisphere of one subject.

Programmable Digital Camera Project:

The Programmable Digital Camera (PDC) project is a collaborative research effort between Stanford University and a distinguished group of industrial partners to investigate algorithms, architectures and circuit designs for single chip programmable digital cameras. The envisioned applications include: still and video digital cameras, video phones, networked cameras for surveillance and security, high dynamic range cameras for automotive and industrial applications, and computer vision.

The Stanford team is led by Professor Abbas El Gamal and Professor Brian Wandell .
